Digital audio players can be fund either as stand-alone devices, like the iPod, or as a build-in feature in mobile phones. They have capabilities of storing and playing digital music files that have been ripped from a CD or downloaded from an online music store.
Most of the digital audio players are compatible of playing audio in formats like MP3, AAC and WMA. Players with multiple format players are strongly recommended since they are having the opportunity to play audio files encoded in different compression formats. The de facto format that can be found in almost all digital audio players is MP3, but this is about to change since some new formats have by far a better compression ratio. Digital audio players can be split into Flash Memory and Hard Drive based audio players.
Flash Memory Audio Players: They are based on the flash memory technology. They have either embedded flash memory or support for memory cards via a memory card slot. The flash based audio players are much smaller, faster, consume less power and are more durable than hard drive audio players.
Hard Disk Drive Audio Player: They are based on embedded hard disk drive. Hard disk drive audio players have far more memory capacity and cost far less per MB than flash memory audio players. Some hard disk drive devices have also a memory card slot in case of extra capacity.
