Once a digital image has been taken by a digital camera it must be saved in a digital image format. The most common image formats is TIFF, RAW and JPEG. All three formats are having their strengths and weaknesses. The TIFF format delivers the highest image quality, the JPEG the smallest file size and the RAW format delivers something in between the TIFF and JPEG formats.
The battle in the image format industry is between two parameters, image quality versus file size. The general rule is that higher image resolution, larger amount of pixels, leads to higher image quality but also to a larger file size. A table over the number digital images that each memory card can hold can be found at digital image storage table.
