The durability of a memory card varies depending if being a standard or a high performance memory card. The format of the memory card, secure digital or compact flash, does not matter based on the fact that all memory cards are based on flash memory technology. The main factor that makes flash memory cards reliable, more than hard disk drives, is that they are solid-state, meaning they contain no moving parts. In general flash memory cards are five to ten times more durable than hard disk drives. The durability of a memory card can be measured by the following parameters:
Humidity: Flash memory cards can tolerate extensive fluctuations in humidity, from 5% up to 96 %.
Temperature: Flash memory cards can tolerate operating temperature from -13F / -25C to +185F / +85C. The tolerance in storage temperature is even more extreme, from –40F / -40C to +212F / +100C.
Drop Shock/Vibration: Flash memory cards can withstand an operating shock of up to 2 000 Gs which is equivalent to being able to withstand a free fall drop from up to 10 foot / 3 meters.
The above test results are referring to the durability of a high performance card. For finding the exact durability of a specific memory card we recommend you to check each manufacture’s technical specifications. The biggest difference between standard and high performance memory cards can be found mostly in the cases of humidity and temperature.
