Memory cards are offering a small form factor and are designed to be easily transported. Both in size and weight memory cards are superior to storage media like hard disk drives. Memory cards can be found in sizes from approximate the size of a matchbox to the size of a thumbnail. They weight ranges from 15 grams to as low as 0.4 gram.
Memory cards can be split up in three categories based on their form factor. In the first category memory cards can be found having approximately the size of a matchbox or small pack of gum. In the next category the size is about the size of a postage stamp or smaller. In last category, which was specifically developed to be used by mobile phones, they have the size of a thumbnail or smaller.
Memory Stick, MultiMediaCard and Secure Digital families are all having three memory card form sizes in their portfolio. Since these standards are competing with each other, all three memory card standards are more or less having similar form factors. The general trend in form factor is that cards are getting smaller, which is obvious, and the latest news was the announcement of the Memory Stick Micro development.
