microSD the number one memory card format in mobile phones according to Strategy Analytics

The latest report from Strategy Analytics says that microSD format is dominating the mobile phone market. According to Strategy Analytics the microSD has rapidly become the format of choice for new mobile phones, in competition with MMCmicro and Sony’s new format, Memory Stick Micro.
 
Over the next five years, sales of mobile phones with memory card slots are expected to grow at an annual average rate of 52 %, with almost three-quarters of all new phones sold in 2010 likely to include a memory card slot. Mobile phone, with memory card slot, sales between 2004 and 2005 achieved a 160 %. Meanwhile, sales of memory cards for mobile phones are expected to grow at a rate of 53 % over the next five years, reaching almost 1.1 billion memory cards by 2010.In 2005 the average storage capacity of memory cards sold for use in mobile phones was 112 MB per card. By 2010 it is predicted that this will have increased to around 1.6 GB, equivalent to an annual average growth rate of over 70 %.

Sony introduces the first Memory Stick Micro (M2) memory cards

Sony has announced that it will introduce the first Memory Stick Micro memory cards with storage capacities of 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB later this year. A Memory Stick PRO adapter will be included, allowing users to exchange data to Memory Stick PRO compatible products.

The SonyEricsson M600i will be the first mobile phone on the market compatible with the Memory Stick Micro card. Sony plans to ship the 256 MB and 512 MB versions from March, simultaneously with the introduction of SonyEricsson’s M600i mobile phone. The 1 GB version will be available from May 2006. It is estimated that prices for the Memory Stick Micro will be similar to the Memory Stick PRO Duo.

The new ultra small memory card is designed to meet the growing storage needs mobile phones. Following the trend of mobile phones, which operate at 1.8 volts, the Memory Stick Micro has been designed as dual-voltage memory card. By offering 3.3 volt the Memory Stick Micro will be able to be used in existing Memory Stick PRO compatible products.

Sony and SanDisk Develop Memory Stick Micro (M2) Format

SanDisk and Sony Corporation today announced the development of the Memory Stick Micro format, an ultra-small IC recording media designed to meet the growing storage needs of highly compact mobile phones. Memory Stick Micro memory card is approximately one-quarter the size of Memory Stick PRO Duo

The memory card’s edges are slotted lengthwise to allow for more slim-line designed connectors to reduce space in host devices. As dual voltage memory card, Memory Stick Micro supports devices operating at 3.3 volts and 1.8 volts. 

Memory Stick Micro is designed as an externally removable media with a controlled eject function to prevent users losing the memory card. Users will be able to insert Memory Stick Micro into an adapter for exchanging data to a Memory Stick PRO compatible product. The Memory Stick Micro will be made available in the first half of 2006.
